Things to do in Pontivy
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Château des Rohan, an iconic castle in the town of Pontivy, was built. The Rohan family decided to make Pontivy the capital of their fiefdom, and the castle likely became habitable as early as 1485. Its chapel became one of the first Protestant temples in France. After being abandoned for several centuries, the castle was restored in 1972 and now hosts temporary exhibitions.
In 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte envisioned making Pontivy a central place in Brittany, stating that he wanted Pontivy to be "in peace, the center of great commerce, and in war, an important military center." In 1804, Pontivy was renamed « Napoléonville », but it wasn't until 1870 that Pontivy became the official name of the town again.
